Discoveries
A beautiful Birch forest found in East Marion after a drive to Orient on a chilly Sunday.....the Ruth Oliva Preserve is off of Route 25...I wasn't wearing the right shoes for a hike, but it's definitely on the list of things to do!
On the way home, a stop at Bahia in Mattituck is in order. A tiny mexican/latin resturaunt tucked in the corner of the King Kullen shopping center is truly a hidden gem.. Yum!

Renewed
Nothing like changing your surroundings to get you out of a slump. I took a day trip into Mahattan last week and certainly was inspired. This is truly a benefit of living on Long Island. Being so close to one of the most exciting cities in the world, although the Long Island Expressway is a necessary evil to get there. I haven't been downtown in a while, and now I am dreaming of regular trips of shopping, photography and eating!
Signs of Spring! NYC is about 1.5 to 2 weeks ahead of us out here on Long Island...so nice to see Witch Hazel blooming in the sleeping garden.

Where have you been??
Well, I have been struggling with this blog for a few months now...seems so simple, just write about a few things to do this weekend....Well, turns out, not so simple. I wanted it to be full of options, lots of interesting things to choose from. For those of us who have lived here all their lives, it seems that there is only so much you can do. Geographically, we have 118 by 23 miles to look.
To be honest, summer is easy. So is spring and fall. But come winter and I am at a lost for things to do. There are no mountains to ski, no hills to hike, its rare that ponds freeze anymore to skate on & this year has been too cold and a ton of snow has fallen, so there is no where to walk the dogs. Sure there are a few museums and such. I’m sure we have every store know to man somewhere between nassau and suffolk counties. But im kinda into hibernating this year.
This blog is only a newborn and i guess poor planning on my part for not taking into account a terrible winter. I have been busy reorganizing a long neglected home. Cleaning out drawers and closets, taking advantage of this time i have to spent at home. I am enjoying it immensely.
As a blogger, you are usually conflicted about how much personal information to share. As someone with a serious chronic illness, having a light, jovial blog is kinda a fib. Not that it can’t be that. In fact, I think making it that way is kinda therapeutic. A fake it til ya make it sorta thing.
The problem lies in the fact that I am bored out of my mind in the winter here. Im sure there will be lots of people who come out of the wood work saying “ there’s lots to do here!” “ how dare you say you’re bored!” “ it is what you make it”.....
Well, to those people I say -um, maybe I shouldn’t say anything to those people.... There is nothing to do here! I am active and creative and do not like to be idle. But to have resources and time to drive many hours just to get supplies, see a good movie(emphasis on good), go to a decent museum....might as well hunker down and wait for the sun to return and the leftover sand and grime to clear. Like I said earlier, I am enjoying this time at home and have kept very busy with lots of projects. But lord, I am not in love with Long Island right now. Actually, I am never in love with Long Island...(see above reference to faking it) Its easy to list the issues that I have with living here, but that would be counter productive. Since I Am living here, I am consciously choosing to be content with being here...easy to do it the warm weather, very hard to do now.
So, where to go from here? I guess the blog will evolve like any other blog and eventually even out with a clear voice about life on Long Island. I would like to be as honest as I can and so with that will come some opinions that might not be pleasing to everyone. But this is my blog and I can say what I want, right? I can choose to reveal as much personal information as i want and should be able to give honest posts about my true feelings regarding living here. Maybe this is just a case of the winter blues or maybe I’ll have to change the name?
